1280 x 720 is the sweet spot: large enough to look sharp on a desktop watch page, small enough that a well-compressed JPG stays under 2MB with room to spare. You can upload a larger 16:9 image such as 1920 x 1080 and YouTube will accept it, but it gets downscaled to roughly 1280 wide for display, so the extra pixels mostly cost you file size.

Why 16:9 matters more than the exact pixels

YouTube crops anything that is not 16:9 to fit a 16:9 box. If you upload a square or 4:3 image, the platform trims the top and bottom (or adds bars in some placements), and you lose control of the framing. Getting the aspect ratio right is what keeps your face, your text, and your subject where you put them.

If your source image is a different shape — a screenshot, a phone photo, a square export — resize it to 1280 x 720 first and decide how it should be cropped, rather than letting YouTube decide for you.

The 2MB limit is a hard cap

YouTube rejects thumbnail uploads over 2MB outright. A clean 1280 x 720 JPG at a sensible quality is usually 150-400KB, so most thumbnails are nowhere near the limit. You tend to hit it only when you export a PNG of a photo-heavy design, or when an editing app saves at maximum quality.

• Photographic thumbnail (a face, a scene, a screenshot): export as JPG. It will almost always be well under 2MB.
• Flat graphic thumbnail (solid colours, sharp text, a logo): PNG can look crisper, but check the file size — a busy PNG can exceed 2MB.
• Already over 2MB: compress it rather than dropping the resolution below 1280 wide.

How your thumbnail is actually displayed

Your one uploaded image is reused everywhere: the full-size watch-page thumbnail, the search results row, the sidebar suggestions, the tiny mobile home-feed card, and the even tinier notification icon. YouTube generates those smaller versions automatically. Two things follow from that:

1. 1Design for the small sizes. If your text is unreadable at the size of a search result, it is unreadable where most people see it. Use few words and a large weight.
2. 2Upload at full 1280 x 720. Small placements are downscaled from your upload, so a low-resolution source makes every size look soft.

A quick checklist before you upload

1. 1Canvas is exactly 1280 x 720 (or another 16:9 size at least 640 wide).
2. 2The key subject and any text sit inside the middle of the frame, away from the edges.
3. 3Exported as JPG for photos, PNG only if it is a flat graphic that needs it.
4. 4File size is under 2MB — check it, do not assume.
5. 5It still reads clearly when you shrink the preview to thumbnail size on screen.
